My favorite artist to employ the trois crayon technique is Flemish, Baroque master, Peter Paul Rubens. Rubens used his three color drawings as preparation studies for paintings. However, many of his most cherished drawings, such as the portrait of his son, Nicolas, were created for their own sake, as completed works of art. Other artists whose trois crayon drawings I admire include Hans Holbein the Younger and Rococo master, Antoine Watteau.
